IRS CP01A: Protect Your Identity. Use the Right IP PIN.

Identity Protection PIN

Notice Instructions: Use the correct PIN when filing the covered federal return; follow the instructions for your filing method.

Keep The Code Private. Keep Your Filing Moving.

CP01A provides your 6-digit Identity Protection PIN. Use the PIN for the calendar year in which you file, including when you file an older federal return. It helps the IRS confirm that the return came from you.

Common Questions About CP01A

Can I Give My IP PIN To My Tax Preparer?
Yes. IRS guidance permits sharing it with your tax preparer. Keep it private otherwise and use the firm’s secure document process.
What If I Lost My IP PIN?
Use your IRS Online Account to retrieve the current PIN, or follow the IRS instructions for reissuance by mail. Retrieval rules differ for minors. Filing without the required PIN can cause rejection or processing delays.
Does The PIN Follow The Tax Year On The Return?
Use the PIN for the calendar year in which you file, including for prior-year federal returns. A state-issued PIN is separate.
